Ricketts Glen harbors Glens Natural Area, a National Natural Landmark. We will be hiking the Falls Trail System on Saturday while we photograph 22 named waterfalls ranging in height from 11 feet to 94 feet. Besides waterfalls the park has many glacial artifacts we can explore.  The park is an old growth forest with diverse wildlife adding to the beauty.

We have rented out an entire lodge for the weekend, the lodge will sleep up to 10 people but we are limiting our class size to 5. Besides our main attraction the falls trail we will star trails and star reflection photography. The first evening we will meet at the Lodge have dinner and a class on long exposure photography techniques. we will end the night with an introduction to light painting techniques. Our last day Sunday we will explore flash and Studio lighting techniques, how you can use your flash to freeze motion and see an unseen world. We will also have a model we can photograph using various lighting set ups.

Waterfall long exposures – General Information

• Photoshop, lightroom tips and digital workflow

What’s Included:

Schedule: (Schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions , giving you the best opportunity for capturing some great images)

  • 4/20/18-  Welcome Dinner – Group Meeting, bring a few photos on a flash drive to share. Long exposure photography techniques, Light painting
  • 4/21/18 – Morning – we will hike the waterfalls trail (apron 3.5 miles) at a leisurely pace taking our time to capture images at each of the 22 waterfalls along the way. Light painting and star photography.
  • 4/22/18 – Flash and Studio lighting class with breakfast, studio photo session at the lodge, with check out at noon.

What should you bring:

  • Camera, if you have a second body bring it along, have a wide angle on one body and a mid telephoto on the second body. 
  • lenses: lens suggestion should include a wide, mid and telephoto range. We recommend 16 to 24 mm, 24 to 70mm and 70 to 200mm.
  • Sturdy tripod and ballhead
  •  Circular polarizer
  • ND filters, We will have ND filters available for the class to use
  • Extra Batteries, battery charger and Memory cards
  • Cable release
  • Laptop and an external hard drive for backup, with power cord.
  • Clothing
    • Hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes
    • Clothes you can layer, in central PA morning temperatures can be in the 40’s and afternoons can be close to 70.
    • Hat with wide brim to to keep sun off your face and neck. a warmer Knit hat and light gloves for our night sessions
    • Some people find using  chemical hand warmers may also come in useful, we will have a supply of them if needed

Physical Requirements

  • Your safety is ultimately our primary concern
  • Physical Requirements: Good condition, we will hike the falls trail at a very slow rate taking time to photograph every water fall
  • Degree of Difficulty:  Moderate
  • Agility: Ability to walk up and downhill and on uneven, rocky/sandy terrain
  • Mental Requirements: A flexible and positive attitude is essential
  • Photographic Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate, experienced photographers are also welcomed
